Pelted with lemons

I've been writing an essay for my theology degree course, and came across something that has really changed my view of the Pharisees:

When Alexander Jannaeus was king of the Jews (103-76BC), he chose to take on some of the High Priest's duties. During one particular Feast of Tabernacles, this so upset the Pharisees that they plucked the lemons off their lemon tree branches (brought to Jersualem to build bivouacs for the festival) and pelted him with them. (Recorded by Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, 13.3.5)

So, here we have the Pharisees engaged in direct political action, such as is nowadays reserved for Greenpeace, the Socialist Worker Party and Joanna Lumley.

However, sadly they didn't get what they wanted. Instead, Alexander had 6000 of them executed...
