Widgets and change

I thought that Lizzie Green was very helpful to us all this morning in talking about change. It's good for us to consider what we need to let go of from the past and what we need to embrace in the present, in order to move forward.

I’m reading a book that Simon Shaw lent me in the week (Tribes, by Seth Godin), in which I found this little statement:

“Managers make widgets. Leaders make change.”

I guess that clarifies that Jesus is really an exceptionally good leader, then. Still, I also wonder how much he enjoyed the new gadgets of the Roman world (like under-floor heating, indoor plumbing and socks), and what widgets found a place in his father’s carpentry shop.

All of which leads up to saying that we have appointed a new church manager! Andrew Clark will start at the beginning of August, overlapping for a month with Peter Allen. Andrew is most competent with a range of widgets, but is also passionate about helping the church to embrace what God is doing in the 21st century, so I trust he will soon be received by many as a leader too.
