This term, our primary pupils took part in the Blue Peter 'Send a Smile' appeal. Blue Peter has teamed up with Operation Smile, a global charity that has 5,000 medical volunteers in 42 of the world's poorest countries, ready to perform free reconstructive surgery on children with cleft lip or cleft palate. Every two and a half minutes a child is born with one of these two conditions but if the child lives in a developing country and doesn't have access to free healthcare, they have to live with their disfigurement. This can destroy them a chance to live life normally.
The aim of the appeal was to give at least 300 children living in India, the life-changing operation they need to repair their cleft. Operation Smile's aim was to make 20,000 surgical gowns which would in turn save the charity £60,000 as each gown normally costs the charity approximately £3.00 to buy. These gowns could be made out of cotton t-shirts which the children bought and had great fun decorating. (the gowns did not need to be sterile.)
Here are some pictures of the children's work.
