The King's School have been consistently encouraged over the years by GCSE results that are of a very high standard for a school that is not academically selective. Between 80 and 95% of students taking exams gain five or more GCSEs at grade C or higher (regional average of 55-65%) and 30-45% of the results are A or A*. The King’s School consistently gained GCSE results that place it in the top three non-selective schools (state or independent) in the county.
The King's School in the Oxford Times "School with vision and quality teaching"
By Avril Coleman, parent of two children who attend The King's School, Witney
When I first visited The King's School, I was sceptical both about independent education, and about Christian schools. However, from first entering the school, I found something very special - vibrancy, optimism, faith and love combined with intellectual rigour, an ethos intrinsically Christian yet outwardly focused.
I had feared some sort of ‘ghetto mentality’. Instead I discovered teachers developing children who were balanced and positively critical in their thinking.
The children were focused not just on themselves, but on serving the local community and even the wider world, through strong links with schools overseas.
The school plays host to frequent international visitors and organises visits to countries like China and Zambia. This is backed up with an excellent academic track record – there were 90 per cent A*-C grades at GCSE in 2006 (an average of 88.1 per cent A* to C from 2002-2006).
According to annual league tables, The King’s School is often the highest performing, non-selective independent school in Oxfordshire.
Since its founding in 1984, the school has grown to two sites in Witney.
The facilities may be smaller than many other independent schools.
However, this is more than compensated for by its ambitious vision, the quality of teaching, and the high level of pastoral care and all round character development of the pupils. The fees also offer excellent value for money.
My own opinion was challenged and changed as a result of visiting The King’s School. I was confronted with the evidence of well developed children, a loving and professional staff and a tangible atmosphere of expectancy that God can be known through every aspect of the curriculum.
I found a school community based on historical Christian value developing children who are fully equipped to influence and play their part in 21st century culture.
The school successfully integrates family, church and school values in a working partnership.
Choosing a school can be one of the hardest decisions any parent has to make. After all, every child spends around 15,000 hours in school between the ages of four and 16 – formative and irreplaceable hours.
For those reading this who are committed to providing their children with a strong Christian foundation to their lives, spending a few hours in Witney at one of The King’s School open evenings, may just prove to be a life changing investment.
